A Little Free Library (LFL) is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common version is a small wooden box of books. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. (Please note that LFLs are not for circulating books from the public library.)

We hope you join us in celebrating this unique feature in our town!

In the meantime, we encourage you to visit the LFLs in your neighborhood and beyond!

Stocking Your LFL
Because of the “take a book, leave a book” model, most LFLs are self-replenishing. However, if you’re in need of more books, the Irondequoit Public Library is here to help!

Here’s what you do:

  • Come to the library anytime during open hours.
  • Let a staff member know that you’re a participant in the Irondequoit LFL program.
  • We will give you, free of charge, up to one bag (per visit) of books from the library bookstore.
  • Repeat as needed!

Register Your LFL

If you own an LFL in Irondequoit and want to participate, please complete the following form. The info you provide will be entered into our LFL database – available on Town and Library websites. This is an opt-in program, and you do not have to provide your street address in the registry.

Please fill out the information you’d like included on the registry. Providing the information indicates that you consent to having it displayed publicly. None of the fields are required, but the more complete your answers, the easier it will be for residents to access your LFL.

Getting Started
Check out these resources from the national Little Free Library network for info on building or purchasing an LFL, as well as answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

Tips on Installing Your LFL
You do not need a permit to place an LFL on your own private property.

Avoid placing your LFL in a public right of way. This includes the grassy area between the sidewalk and road. Permits are required for any work that changes the right of way. For more information, see the Rights of Way section in the Irondequoit Town Code.

Make sure your LFL is installed securely and that placement doesn’t impede activities like walking, biking, or snow removal.

Once Your LFL is Installed
Come back to our resource page for Irondequoit LFL owners. This page includes info about registering your site with the Irondequoit LFL network as well as how to keep your LFL stocked.

You can also register your site with the national LFL Network. This costs around $40. (Registration with the Irondequoit network is free of charge.)
