The 2023 edition of the Rochester International Film Festival, a local festival honoring the world’s best short films, took place earlier this year at the Dryden Theatre.

If you missed it, or if you’d like to learn more about the history of this great local film event, the organizers will join us at the library on Tuesday, September 5, at 7:00 PM to present a program of seven films from the RIFF’s history.

The seven films to be shown during Movies on a Shoestring Presents Best of the Fest include:

Animated Star Spangled Banner — “O, say can you see”… Produced by six Animators. (Skip Battaglia – 1990 – 2 minutes)

Country Lanes — This film is for all the bowlers who hope to participate in the ABC. (Richard Rohrbach – 1993 – 3 minutes)

Extra Innings — A reporter interviews the manager of the Boston Red Sox in an attempt to uncover secrets from the past. In the end, everything is not as it seemed. (John Grey – 2020 – 9 minutes)

Kino Ratten — Rats commandeer the projector in a pre-war German cinema and put on a show of their own. (Peter McCully – 2020 – 10 minutes)

Mercy Table — Amira drives a rickshaw for a living. When she receives an offer to deliver food for the “Mercy Table”, it becomes a challenge. (Taghrig Abdel Maksoud – 2021 – 16 minutes)

Two Meters Distance — During the pandemic, two neighbors face loneliness and oblivion by themselves. (Maria Dias Megias & Alfonso Rodrigues Naranjo – 2021 – 8 minutes)

Split Ticket — In 1947, congressman/future presidents Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy traveled to McKeesport, PA to debate an upcoming labor bill. This much we know from history books. But what else happened on this trop? (Alfred Thomas Catalfo – 2023 – 20 minutes)

All films from this program are rated PG and no registration is required to attend Movies on a Shoestring Presents Best of the Fest.

Next year’s Rochester International Film Festival will be held from June 6-8, 2024.
