The Irondequoit Police Department is celebrating its 100th year anniversary in 2024, and this special program with Town Historian Greg Merrick will delve into how the town’s law enforcement personnel evolved from “Constables” to “Special Police” to today’s Police Officers.

There will also be time to learn about some of the department’s major historical events, including…

— Who were the chiefs of police;
— Officers that were shot in the line of duty;
— Line-of-duty deaths in the Irondequoit Police Department;
— Officers from Irondequoit who became chiefs of other police agencies;
— The first female officers and how they were accepted within the department;
— Community events, including bicycle inspections, Kiddie Fun Day at Sea Breeze Amusement Park, and the Explorers Club.

Greg Merrick is a long-time resident of Irondequoit, and he served in many branches of police, fire and emergency agencies throughout Irondequoit and the greater Rochester area. Upon retiring as Fire Marshal, he began serving as the Town Historian for Irondequoit.

Irondequoit Historical Society Presents The History of the Irondequoit Police Department will be held on Thursday, April 4, at 7:00 PM. No registration is required to attend and we hope you’ll be able to join us.
