Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with the library this May for an Ikebana Show and Demonstration on Saturday, May 30, from 10:30 AM until 4:00 PM.
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging, and Ikebana International is a non-profit cultural organization whose objective is to stimulate and perpetuate the study of ikebana and related arts throughout the world.
Ikebana uses seasonal flowers and other natural materials, such as leaves and branches, which are carefully placed in vases or other vessels, to create aesthetic form and balance. Members of Ikebana International Chapter #53 will exhibit floral arrangements from four different schools of Ikebana (Hijiri Ikenobo, Ichiyo, Ohara, and Sogetsu) during this event, and there will be demonstrations by teachers at 12:00 Noon, 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM.
This program will be presented by the Rochester Chapter #53 of Ikebana International, which meets monthly on the third Thursday of the month at the First Baptist Church (175 Allens Creek Rd.). Our motto is “Friendship Through Flowers.” Around 160 chapters operate in 50 countries, and we’re fortunate that our chapter in Rochester has existed for over 60 years.
This program is free and open to the public, so please join us if you can!
