After a well-deserved Summer break, the Irondequoit Historical Society will be back at the library on Thursday, September 5, at 7:00 PM for From Charlotte to Irondequoit: Crossing the Genesee by Ferry.

Marie Poinan, a volunteer at the Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse and the Greece Historical Society, will tell us about the life of Captain William Andrews and the story of the Windsor Ferry.

The Windsor Ferry began in 1894 and took cattle and people – and later, cars – across the Genesee River from Charlotte to Irondequoit. The trip took seven minutes and tickets were just 5¢. Captain Andrews lived on River Street in Charlotte and was at the helm for over 30 years without ever having had an accident.

In addition to her volunteer work, Marie Poinan is also an author and she published Pioneer Families of the Town of Greece in 2021.

No registration is required to attend this program, so please join us at the library if you can!
