Our DEI Book Discussion Series with Irondequoit Town Supervisor Andraé Evans will continue in May with an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Book Discussion about Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo.

Last Night at the Telegraph Club won the National Book Foundation’s National Book Award for Young People’s Literature in 2021, and the discussion will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 6:30 PM.

BOOK DESCRIPTION: Last Night at the Telegraph Club is an intersectional, historical fiction novel set in the 1950s about a young Chinese American women growing up in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Set against the backdrop of the red scare, Lily Hu, a young women fascinated with space exploration and rockets navigates the complexities of her first romantic relationship with her white friend, Kathleen. In this meticulously researched title, Lo skillfully layers rich details, such as how Lily has to deal with microaggressions from gay and straight women alike and how all of Chinatown has to be careful of the insidious threat of McCarthyism.
