Meet IPL’s New Sister Library in Roma, Texas

The Town of Irondequoit has been a “Sister City” to Pescara, Italy and Poltava, Ukraine for many years, and now the Irondequoit Library is happy to announce that we’ve partnered with our first “Sister Library” in Roma, Texas.

The Roma Public Library is located in a community rich in Hispanic history and culture, and Starr County, Texas is also about the same size as Irondequoit, making it the perfect Sister Library (their warmer climate is pretty nice too).

The Sister Library concept was developed by the American Library Association as a way to build library and community awareness of other locals and cultures as well as the commonalities between the sister libraries and the areas they serve.

Now the work of developing this Sister Library relationship has begun. Volunteers are meeting with the Roma Library via Zoom and sharing ideas for future cooperative programs and cultural exchanges. PRESS RELEASE
The Irondequoit Public Library is pleased to announce a new initiative through the formation of a “Sister Library” cooperative agreement with the Roma Public Library located in Roma, Texas. This concept of a sister library relationship was developed through the American Library Association as a way to build library and community awareness of other locals and cultures as well as the commonalities between the sister libraries and the areas they serve.

In the early months of 2021, four local library users joined together as a team to brainstorm ideas on how to connect with others in a time of isolation due to Covid. After much discussion, the idea of the Sister Library project came to mind and it was decided that the Irondequoit Public Library would be the perfect starting point to build that sister relationship. The team then chose Roma Public Library as a sister library because Starr County, Texas is about the same size as Irondequoit and is a community rich in Hispanic history and culture. And has a much warmer climate than Western New York!

With approval obtained from both library’s governing boards, the work of developing this sister library relationship has begun. The Sister Library Team is meeting with the Roma library via Zoom and sharing ideas for future cooperative programs and cultural exchanges.
