Did you know that the Irondequoit Public Library is celebrating our 75th Anniversary this year?

In 1946, Pauline Evans began sharing an idea with her neighbors. Up until that time, Irondequoit did not have its own public library and she hoped to change that. Ms. Evans talked with every organized group in the town, held meetings in her home for months, and enlisted the help of Irondequoit school officials. Following her grassroots campaign, the decision was finally made to try an experimental library and beginning on June 30, 1947, a temporary library opened.

Visit the “About the Library” page to read the rest of our History of the Irondequoit Public Library.

And be sure to join us this month for even more anniversary events, including a presentation from the Town Historian and library staff (Commemorate the Irondequoit Public Library’s 75th Anniversary!) on June 9 and Summer Reading kickoff (Summer of 75 Celebration!) on June 30.
